Flowering Trees

Magnolia Magnolias may be deciduous, semi-evergreen or evergreen. They may bloom in early spring before leaves develop, or they may flower in summer when in full foliage. The three main species discussed here are Southern magnolia, star magnolia and sweetbay magnolia.

Dogwood The Dogwood has beautiful blooms that first appear in May, making it a great ornamental tree. It soon develops deep green leaves, which reward you by turning scarlet in the fall. Red berries appear in the fall.

Redbud The Redbud is a small deciduous tree that displays an abundance of purple blossoms in the spring. It has large heart shaped leaves during the summer, and long seedpods in the fall. Red Bud trees have a yellow fall color.

Crabapple The Indian Summer Crabapple has abundant pink flowers with an extended blooming period. It blooms with King bloom of Red Delicious apple tree. Attractive rose-red flowers in spring followed by bright red fruit.

Weeping Cherry The Weeping Cherry tree has a medium growth rate for its arching vertical growth, but a rapid growth rate for its many weeping stems. The Weeping Cherry tree prefers moist, well-drained soils of average fertility in full sun, but is adaptable to poor soils, compacted soils, dry soils, and heat. It is a specimen tree with single trunk.

Bradford Pear A great benefit of the Bradford Pear is that it is a rapid grower, achieving a 12 to 15 feet increase in height over an 8- to 10-year period. Bradford Pear trees are shallow-rooted and will tolerate most soil types.
